Misconceptions about Moissanite
Moissanite is a gemstone that is evolved from the stars. It came from a meteorite crash, around 50k years ago in Arizona that left crystal fragments behind, these fragments were identified and discovered by a French chemist Dr. Henri Moissan, he examined these crystal fragments and mistakenly realized the crystals as diamonds but after rigorous research, in 1904, he found out these meteor crystal fragments were a rare mineral called silicon carbide which is today popularly know as Moissanite. A moissanite stone has an eternal beauty and brilliance.
The silicon carbide was later named Moissanite in the honour of Dr Henri Moissan. Moissanite is a very beautiful gemstone, especially the offwhite moissanite, it has a high shine, high quality and immense brilliance with extreme fire and lustre. It has some of the features similar to a diamond and therefore, many times moissanite is misconceived to be a diamond. But this is a complete myth.
Here are the most common misconceptions about moissanite that you must be aware of:
1. Moissanite is a diamond: Let us make this very clear, a moissanite is NOT a diamond. It is misconceived to be a diamond because of some of the similar features it holds. Moissanite can be used as a diamond alternative but it’s not a diamond. A diamond is a 99.9% carbon, on the other hand, moissanite is made of silicon carbide. People prefer to wear moissanite because it has many of its features better than a diamond. It is chemically made different gemstone, it has more lustre, more shine, high brilliance and fire than a diamond and yet having all these qualities higher than the diamond, it is still an affordable choice.
2. Moissanite is a Cubic Zirconia: Cubic Zirconia is one of the diamond’s alternative, but it is neither a diamond nor moissanite. Moissanite is harder than CZ. On the moh scale of hardness, moissanite stands at 9.25 whereas a CZ stands at 8, so definitely moissanite is much harder than cubic zirconia. A CZ gemstone is not durable enough whereas moissanite lasts for a very long time. So, it’s very clear that both are very different and unique in their properties.
3. Moissanite is fake: Moissanite is NOT fake. Something that is man-made doesn’t mean its fake. Moissanite is a real silicon carbide that does exist in this world. Silicon carbide is not large enough to make that into a gemstone so therefore companies that make moissanite they have to create moissanite in a lab so that it can be made a gemstone. So it’s a lab-created stone. It does not necessarily mean its fake. Something that is lab created means its man-made, and it has nothing to do with what is called fake. We also have lab-created diamonds in the market, but that doesn’t mean its fake, it’s still a diamond!
4. Moissanite is expensive: If moissanite is compared with the optical properties of a diamond, it is a very high-quality gemstone as compared to a diamond, in all the terms. In terms of clarity, cut, shine, brilliance, fire and lustre. Having all the qualities higher than a diamond it is still affordable and not at all expensive. If you go to buy a 5-carat moissanite ring, it will cost you less as compared to what the same 5-carat diamond ring will cost. You can buy the cheapest moissanite rings at your budget limit with the same high brilliance and shine.
5. Moissanite is a low-quality gem: Moissanite is NOT a low-quality gem. The black moissanite rings are considered to be the best. Moissanite has the highest quality, whether you talk about the brilliance, fire, shine, or lustre, it always stands at the top, and if you talk about its durability, it still stands at a good position, i.e. at 9.25, just one step below to a diamond which has durability scale of complete 10. So, moissanite is a really high-quality gemstone ever found on earth. You can’t find jewellery better than this.
So, these were some misconceptions about moissanite. The right notions about the moissanite will go like:
- Moissanite is NOT a Dimaond.
- Moissanite is NOT fake.
- Moissanite is NOT expensive.
- Moissanite is NOT Cubic Zirconia.
- Moissanite is NOT low- quality.
